Yan Su (961-1040), courtesy name Muzhi, was born in Yidu of Qingzhou (now Qingzhou city). He passed the imperial examination at the age of 40 and used to be local government officer in Fengxiang Prefecture, Kaocheng County, Henan Prefecture, Yuezhou, Mingzhou, Zizhou, Bozhou, Qingzhou, Yingzhou, Dengzhou and other places. He later became the Vice-minister of the Ministry of Rites. He was an honest and integrated official in administration, and a very learned and talented man. As a student who learned painting from Li Cheng, he himself was a good painter. Nowadays we can still see his Qinyou Fisherman’s Song and Rivers and Mountains after Snow and other painting works. His achievements in science and technology are particularly prominent. In 1022, he wrote a book named On the Sea Tides, and drew a Tide Map (lost), which provided reliable information for the fishery production and water transportation.
