Xu Gan (170-217), courtesy name Weichang, was a philosopher and writer who lived in the late Eastern Han dynasty. He was born in the Beihai Prefecture and one of the “Jian’an Seven”-- a group of poets.
In his early years, Xu Gan wasn’t interested in politics and social status. Though he lived a destitute and hard life, he never felt sad. He was good at writing Chuci (ballad), Hanfu (rhymed prose) and poetry. His five-character poems were among the best of his time. His works are mostly lost in history except On the Doctrine of Mean. Collected Works of Xu Weichang, a book edited by people of later generations is also rare to see. The old Shouguang County Annals includes 8 of his poems.
