The clay sculpture of Niejiazhuang is a unique type of clay sculpture in China combining shape, color, sound and movement, which contains rich cultural heritage and folk customs of Gaomi, Shandong, and is included in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection List. Originating in the First Year of Emperor Wanli Period of the Ming Dynasty, it has a history of more than 400 years. During the Period of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, artisans in Niejiazhuang turned from making Guozihua (clay firework) to clay utensils, bibelots and toys for folk use such as dolls, birds, beasts and fish. During the Period of Emperor Jiaqing of the Qing Dynasty, the clay sculpture of Niejiazhuang stepped into the stage of maturity, becoming artworks with well-polished shapes, colors and sound. Represented by the Clay Roaring Tiger, the products featured simple and plump shapes, bold and smooth brushstrokes, strongly contrasted colors, and a prominent freehand style of Chinese painting. In 2008, it was included in the second batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection List.
