Yu Shun was a legendary 23rd-22nd century B.C. leader of ancient China, among the Sovereigns and Five Emperors. Born Yao Chonghua, he was often known as Shun or Yu Shun. He was born in Zhufeng Village, Wanjiazhuang, Zhucheng. He received the mantle of leadership from Emperor Yao. The empire is named Yu. Therefore he was called Yu Shun.
Shun was renowned for his modesty and filial piety and was glorified for their virtue as idealist model by the Confucian philosophers. He took the throne from Emperor Yao in 2255 B.C. and ruled for 48 years. His regime remained prosperous and peaceful. He died at the age of 110.
