On October 15, renowned as the “world’s most influential international platform,” the Davos World Economic Forum released that “IoT of Weifang” , as the model of smart city construction with high reproduction for sustainable development recommended by the committee to the whole country, has been selected to the four typical cases, CWW reported.
On October 25, organizing committee of the Smart City Expo in Barcelona which is the world’s largest and most influential smart city theme exposition, announced that Weifang, China has won the “Smart City Nomination Award” from more than 600 participating cities in the world, and it will compete with other five cities winning the prize for the “Global Smart City Award”, meanwhile, Weifang has been invited to deliver a keynote speech to share the experience of smart city construction.
“Successively winning two international awards is not only the approval for smart Weifang construction, but also recognition and affirmation for urban construction model of IoT of Weifang.” Zhang Baoqing, Director of Weifang Smart City Construction Office told reporters that since 2017, with raising the “Smart Weifang 3.0”concept and the “Huawei - Weifang” IoT industry alliance settling in Weifang, “Smart Weifang” has been under rapid construction, and the first domestic NB-IoT based technology standard demonstration city has started in Weifang; “Smart City Pass” has been created through application of mobile Internet and real-name authentication technology, and the initiative of smart life alliance “without certificate, card or wallet” has been put forward, so that the innovative smart city is developing to be realized.
Build “IoT of Weifang” to Create a New Growth Pole of Strong Industrial City
The World Economic Forum enjoys the title of “the most influential international platform” with the main participants being the heads of state of developed countries, senior officials in world economic circles and authoritative experts and scholars. Its aim is to explore the existing problems in the world economy and promote international economic cooperation and exchanges. Therefore, it is regarded as the “most authoritative voice” of the world economic development.
This year, the World Economic Forum launched a new project——IoT4D ( IoT for sustainable Development) evaluation which is designed to encourage industries and governments to achieve sustainable development in cities and communities through IoT. The Working Group of the World Economic Forum and MIT conducted a detailed review of more than 640 cases in the world. According to the project size, target audience, actual impact, scalability, and other factors,5typical cases were finally selected, of which Weifang got the highest score which is the only one included as a municipality.
It is reported that in June 2016, Huawei NB-IoT standard became a new generation of IoT technology standard. After extensive research and comparative argument, Weifang believed that NB -IoT will be the leader in long-range wireless communication technology featured in wide coverage, low power consumption, mass access and low-cost. Weifang Municipal People’s Government cooperated with Huawei company to build “IoT of Weifang”, including the construction of NB-IoT sense network, carrying out innovation and application of IoT in urban administration, public services and digital economy concerning smart river chief, smart agriculture, smart street lights, smart parking and smart municipal administration, in a bid to build the first IoT city model based on NB-IoT technology.
Leaders of Weifang Smart City Construction Office told reporters that “IoT of Weifang” is not just a platform, and ultimately it will integrate all aspects of urban management to make Weifang be a new smart and innovative city, so the impact of IoT has great influence on the sustainable development of the economy. Relying on Huawei’s more than 2,000 partners in smart city construction, now Huawei (Weifang) Smart City IoT Industry Alliance has gathered more than 50 companies and will strive to form a RMB 10-billion IoT industry in 3-5 years. By then, the IoT industry will become a new growth pole in construction of a “strong industrial city” .
Promote the “V Pai”Mobile Application to Create a New Bright Spot in Construction of Quality City
As China’s only demonstration city project selected in the Smart City Expo in Barcelona this year, “V Pai” is anew “Smart City Pass” created through mobile Internet and real-name authentication technology.
“V Pai” integrates ID cards, medical insurance cards, and IC cards such as bank cards, bus cards, bicycle cards, access control cards, book borrowing cards and travel cards in the mobile phone APP to realize convenient utilization such as citizen affairs processing and transportation and mobile payments for shopping, spending, recharging, healthcare, hydropower, and administrative payments. Accordingly, Weifang initiated the “Smart Life Alliance without certificate, card or wallet,” so that citizens can enjoy the new life of a smart city with “one phone in hand accessible throughout the city.” At present, the “V Pai” has been pilot operated in municipal and county level government affairs service centers, Sunshine Tower, municipal office building, municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, social security networking pharmacies, some hotels and supermarkets, and started to promote in some counties. The first unattended supermarket in Shandong is also expected to be completed in Good Square cooperated by “V-Pai” and Weifang Zhongbai Group.
It is reported that in 2012, Weifang was identified as one of the first pilot cities of two smart cities in Shandong by Shandong Provincial Government. Considering the homogenization trend of “all cities look the same” in the construction of smart city, Weifang insisted on “people-oriented , innovation-driven” concept, and strove to explore the new model of smart city construction featured in public service, taking the public focus, hot spots and difficult issues as the entry point. Leaders of Weifang Smart City Construction Office told reporters that “If we say that IoT of Weifang focuses on improving urban management and public services, the V-Pai pays more attention to the people’s sense of achievement and making it easier for people in Weifang to experience the smart and convenient life through using mobile phones.”
As a new generation of urban passport, “V Pai” will also innovate more functions in urban management and services to realize the leap of public service from “running errands for once” to “zero running errands”. “With this passport, citizens or businesses can handle some simple matters without leaving home, so that relevant departments can identify and complete related affairs based on the identification code sent by the mobile phone.” He introduced that “V Pai” can be a perfect replacement for the current “Citizen Card” with its features of “all-dimensional coverage” and “full virtualization” and “easy to carry”, and high reproduction is also an important reason for its winning the Barcelona Smart City Award.
Consolidate “Top” Advantage to Release New Vitality for Innovation and Development
Days ago, the case of Smart Weifang 3.0 with IoT was successfully selected in the White Paper of 2017 China’s New Smart City Construction Cases by the National Development and Reform Commission. Weifang government and Huawei jointly worked out the national standard of “Technical Requirements for Smart City Equipment Connection Management of Public Service Platform,” which has been approved by China National Information Security Standardization Technical Committee. In addition, the “Zhiji” identity authentication platform which the “V Pai” is based on, is developed by Weifang Public Security Bureau and Smart Taihua Industrial Group Co., Ltd.. The unity of citizenship in the real world and the online world can be realized through multi-dimensional verification on the phone to get handset two-dimensional code of ID card (e-ID), thus proving “I am I” on the network. The platform is a major innovation in the field of network authentication and is a pioneer in China. It has won the first prize of Shandong Science and Technology Progress Award 2017 and has been approved by the Ministry of Public Security.
Leaders of Weifang Smart City Construction Office told reporters that in the past two years, with the highly attention and vigorous promotion of the Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government, the construction of Weifang Smart City has been walking in the forefront of the country. Winning these two international awards marks the new height and level of Weifang’s Smart City construction. Next, Smart City Construction Office will further intensify its efforts to continue to consolidate Weifang’s leading role in the Smart City industries to attract more innovative enterprises, research institutions and experts and related industries to settle in Weifang, injecting innovative driving force for building modern strong industrial city and providing new energy for innovative development of Weifang.
